Recursion
I’ve been fascinated by recursion for a long, long time. Starting with audio engineering for live theater - feedback? That’s recursion, output to input, modified by the room it takes place in. Later, in undergrad, studying control systems, the vast majority of which employ recursion to detect and correct for error. And lastly in art, in projects like Alvin Lucier’s “I Am Sitting In A Room.”
This page captures some of those artistic experiments, including the long-ago 01V project (in which a Yamaha 01V mixer was allowed to sing to itself, with my modifications of effects producing structure) and more recent experiments in allowing an LLM to “sit in a room” - to recursively redefine an image using a diffusion model in order to refine it to its essence.
